Pleasanton is renowned for its high-quality education system, yet an important issue affects Pleasanton Middle Schools students. Since Pleasanton has 2 mainstream high schools and 3 middle schools, one has to be divided and it happens to be Pleasanton Middle School. Even though Pleasanton Middle School students are at a disadvantage because of the divide, there is no compensation through priority open enrollment. 

For three formative years, students in Pleasanton's middle schools forge friendships and develop a sense of community. In some cases, these bonds are disrupted, because of different high school assignments based on address. Research indicates that a stable social environment significantly boosts students’ confidence, performance, and engagement in school activities. Another issue is that the geographic location of either high school poses transport difficulties for certain students. 

While this petition does not call for automatic acceptance of open enrollment requests, it does request amendment of the criteria for open enrollment acceptance to provide Pleasanton Middle School students priority access to the high school of their choice, irrespective of the reason provided.
